Sam Tarassoli

Postdoctoral Scholar, Guldberg Lab

Sam Tarassoli is a surgeon-scientist working where musculoskeletal trauma biology meets translational tissue engineering. In the Guldberg lab, he studies how the body’s response to severe injury shapes healing at the injury site and how that can be applied to improving outcomes for patients.

His approach is shaped by a decade of clinical research. He contributed to INTELLECT, an international multicentre study of lower-limb open fractures, and to its paediatric analysis, published in the British Journal of Surgery. He was a co-investigator on the RECOVERY trial during the COVID-19 pandemic, recruiting patients in Wales. As a clinical researcher at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, he studied outcomes of robotic-assisted latissimus dorsi harvest in breast reconstruction.

Sam has been a part of Professor Whitaker’s ReconRegen group in Swansea, where he also served as a Clinical Lecturer at Swansea University Medical School. His work there focused on 3D bioprinting and cartilage tissue engineering. Alongside this research, he completed core surgical training in Wales, rotating through plastic surgery, general surgery and trauma and orthopedics. Following, he joined University College Hospital London as a Senior Clinical Fellow in upper limb trauma surgery. Sam holds a medical degree from Swansea University, an MSc with Distinction in Nanotechnology and Regenerative Medicine from University College London and achieved his membership board exams from the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
