Casey received his B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering with focus on Polymer Science and Engineering from the Pennsylvania State University in December 2001. During this time, he performed research in the field of polymer rheology in Prof. Ralph Colby’s laboratory.  

He received his Ph.D. in Macromolecular Science and Engineering from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland Ohio in 2010 under the direction of Prof. Morton Litt. The topic of his dissertation work was “Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Rigid-Rod Polyelectrolytes with Improved Dimensional Stability for use as Fuel Cell Proton-Exchange Membranes”. He continued his doctoral research from 2011-2012 before joining the University of Oregon as a Postdoctoral Research Associate in January 2012 in the Chemistry Department under the direction of Prof. Richard Chartoff

In 2016, Casey became the Director of the CAMCOR Polymer Characterization Laboratory with a joint appointment in the Master’s Industrial Internship Program Polymer Science Track. He assumed the role of Polymer Program Manager in the Knight Campus Graduate Internship Program in September 2018.

His diverse research has included shape-memory polyurethanes for next-generation condoms (sponsored by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Grand Challenges), biodegradable polyesters for biomedical applications, inkjet printing of gradient-refractive index nanocomposites for lenses, polymer electrolyte fuel cell membranes, liquid crystalline materials, temperature- and light-activated polymer actuators, supramolecular and stimulus-responsive reversible polymerization, and electrically-conductive and electroluminescent polymers.
