BioE 252 - Introduction to Bioengineering II (Winter 22', 23', 24', '25, '26)

This is the second in a three-course series that introduces students to basic concepts in electronics and fluid mechanics with a focus on bioengineering applications. Topics include linear circuits, Ohm’s law, basic electronic components, circuit analysis, Fourier transforms, fluid pressure, the Bernoulli equation, conservation principles in fluid control volumes, and laminar fluid flow.

BioE 410/510 - Synthetic Biology (Spring '22, '23, '25, '26)

This course will focus on the application of engineering principles to design and build biological systems with predictable behaviors. It will teach students to design, build, and model simple biological circuits and systems. It will cover topics including basic biological components and their standardization, methods for analysis, modeling tools, engineering principles in biology, DNA assembly, genome engineering, and ethics. Examples of practical applications in multiple areas will be explored. Students will discuss relevant literature and develop their own synthetic biology idea into a project.​

BioE 607: ScoPE-JC (SynthetiC biOlogy and Protein Engineering Journal Club) (Fall, Winter, Spring)

In this weekly JC we explore the latest literature covering the engineering of biological organisms, proteins, and nucleic acids with a focus on new technologies and methods. Announcements are sent out on the ScoPE-JC mailing list and a dedicated Slack channel.

Synthetic Biology Competitions

Our lab encourages undergrad students to form teams and participate in competitons such as iGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machine) and iDEC (International Directed Evolution Competition). We organized the 2021 UOregon iDEC team, which won 5 awards at the final competition. Together with the Hosseinzadeh lab, we helped organize the 2022 UOregon2023 UOregon2024 UOregon, 2025 UOregon, 2026 UOregon iGEM teams. Interested students should contact Calin.

The Plesa Lab 

Founded in 2020, the Plesa Lab is a synthetic biology research group within the University of Oregon's Phil and Penny Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact. Based in the Department of Bioengineering in Eugene, Oregon, the Plesa Lab builds scalable systems to accelerate the pace at which we understand and engineer biological protein-based systems.
