OUR mission

Our mission is to use advanced manufacturing towards biomedical materials to meet clinical challenges and benefit humanity. 

The Dalton Lab uses advanced manufacturing breakthroughs which are then applied in applications that serve the benefit of humanity. We perform basic science and push the limits of manufacturing, but maintain the regulatory framework as our guardrails so that our products translate into application as quickly as possible. Rather than seeing the regulatory process as a barrier to translation, we see it as a source of innovation. By taking a holistic and fundamental approach to technology-based research we challenge ourselves to change perceptions of what the future of manufacturing could look like. Our laboratory is turning the innovation cycle upside down by first manufacturing impossible materials, then applying them to meet clinical challenges.

Research

We specialize in melt electrowriting, but also hybridize other advanced processes to create new objects with distinct properties that outperform existing gold standards. In particular, we work with 3D printing technologies towards full digitization of biomaterials, allowing rapid research cycles and innovative biomedical products.

Knight Campus Department of Bioengineering Associate Professor Paul Dalton has won the 2026 Faculty Excellence in Universal Design Award from the UO's Accessible Education Center for his exceptional commitment to creating inclusive learning environments where all students have equitable opportunities to learn and succeed.
Paul Dalton has been recognized with a 2026 Outstanding Research Awards from the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation
Parisa Hosseinzadeh received the Early-Career Award, the IMPACT Team received the award for Advancing a Flourishing Research and Innovation Community, and Paul Dalton was recognized with the Innovation and Impact Award.

The Dalton Lab 

In 2020, the Dalton Lab relocated to the University of Oregon's Phil and Penny Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact. Based in the Department of Bioengineering in Eugene, Oregon, the Dalton Lab uses advanced manufacturing to create new clinical solutions.
