Computational mechanisms of learning
OUR mission
Our mission is to understand the computational mechanisms of learning in the brain.
We work to establish mathematical bridges from micro-scale synaptic modifications to macro-scale learning outcomes. We do this through improving computational models of learning in the brain, developing methods to quantify the effects of learning on neural representations and behavior, and testing models in clinically relevant contexts. Ultimately, we hope to create models that connect synaptic plasticity to complex brain functions and learning.
Research
We create mathematical bridges from micro-scale synaptic modifications to macro-scale learning outcomes. We use using a spectrum of approaches, ranging from linear tensor decompositions, to dynamical similarity metrics, to hierarchical, nonlinear state-space methods.

Founded in 2026, the Bredenberg Lab is a theoretical neuroscience research group within the University of Oregon's Phil and Penny Knight Campus for Accelerating Scientific Impact. Based in the Department of Bioengineering in Eugene, Oregon, the Bredenberg Lab works to understand the computational mechanisms of learning in the brain.
