Watch a Breakout Session
The virtual grand opening celebration on Dec. 2 concluded with six discussions exploring the various impacts of the Knight Campus.
Discovery and Translation
The Knight Campus unlocks new opportunities in fields never before studied at the University of Oregon, such as bioengineering. Its leaders and faculty members are tackling challenges such as spinal injuries, strokes, macular degeneration, rheumatoid arthritis, and diabetes.
At the Knight Campus, teams of scientists, researchers and students blur lines between disciplines and pursue discovery in the lab; develop novel biomedical devices and therapies; and deploy new technologies to the marketplace, where products, innovations, or cures impact people’s lives.
Academic Programming
The Knight Campus charts a new course for the UO, in fields such as bioengineering, helping people while cultivating the next generation of scientists with a novel, experiential approach. A combination of technical training and an emphasis in entrepreneurship, career development, and communication define Knight Campus academic programs and position students for success.
The Skybridge
The Knight Campus skybridge connects to other UO science facilities physically and metaphorically while also creating an architectural landmark for the community and university. The tied-arch bridge — using uses two butterfly arches and suspension cables — is designed as a simple and pure expression of engineering to maximize the visual lightness of the structure.
Ecosystem and Ethos
Rooted in the University of Oregon’s 60-year history of interdisciplinary research, the best-in-class facility is specifically designed to encourage a team-based, interactive approach to research. From day one, students and faculty are immersed in the unique culture of the Knight Campus, one that emphasizes the rapid translation of new procedures, medical devices or treatments.
Form Following Function
This world class facility was designed to support the impact cycle, a foundational idea of the Knight Campus best represented by the concepts of discovery, development, and deployment. The building will be the home of discovery at the lab bench, the development of biomedical devices and therapies, and the deployment of new technologies to the marketplace.
The Cascading Wall
The signature architectural element of the Knight Campus exterior is affectionately known as the Cascading Wall. Inspired by water cascading over rocks, the second skin of glass on the building’s southern, eastern and western facades reduces solar heat inside research environments and reduces glare, allowing those spaces access to abundant daylight and dynamic views of surrounding landscapes.
Innovation and Entrepreneurship
Whether it’s with 3D-printed patient-specific implants, implantable screws with built-in sensors to monitor healing, or a molecule to combat macular degeneration, the Knight Campus’ high-octane collaborative approach to innovation is already fueling success. Faculty recruited from around the world have launched three start-up companies, moving new technologies into the marketplace, where they can help make patients’ lives better.
